A great starter series. Alfred's has been used for 20 years of beginner pianists in my household

My daughter is exploding with the step-by-step approach of Alfred's instruction books. The graphics are fun for a 1st grader. The concepts are well thought-out. The lessons allow for gradual, yet excellent progression in learning music theory and piano skills.

Great Teaching Series. I've Used It For Years.

I've used the Alfred's Basic Piano Course to teach my students piano for years. It guides me through teaching the music theory my students need and also progresses through the various levels at a rate that's quick enough to keep my students from getting too bored! I also use their Piano Solo books for recital pieces, etc. Excellent and challenging series for piano students of all levels- from 1A up. When you get into books 4,5, and 6, the pieces have some decent substance and provide plenty of challenge.

Towards the end of this book, some of the ...

Towards the end of this book, some of the pages become a lot of instruction with only a little actual doing. I would prefer a lot more "problems to do" and a lot less teaching as I, as the teacher, can do the teaching. I want the students to have more practice actually identifying the chords.

Good

I like this series. Step by step for a child. One of the four books your child will probably use with.

MANDATORY

Mandatory component of the Alfred teaching system. If you want your kid to learn how to play the piano, you've got to have this book.

Good not great

Teaches bare bones music theory. Theory book is not very informative nor does it offer enough explanation, however it is better than nothing. My children don't enjoy completing the lessons, however it has helped them even with their cello and violin playing. They have a better understanding of scales because of theory. Easy for the older child who is an independent learner, more difficult for the younger child who will be easily bored. The Musical Concepts book Alfred offers is better, especially if you are looking for an all in one solo and a better theory book. And the cost is better since you get two books in one. The explanations of the concepts and the diagrams are better in Musical Concepts as compared to Theory Book. Both books are written by a different team of authors.
